“The infected blood scandal is an appalling failure of the British state which we must learn from.”
The Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane MP welcomed the announcement from the Government on the commitment to ensure that compensation payments are made to people who became victims of the contaminated blood scandal by the end of this year.
The Infected Blood scandal is an appalling injustice that has left victims denied justice for decades. The calls for recognition and compensation have gone on far too long, now is the time for action.
In the period between 1970 and 1991 inadequate screening of blood products resulted in over 30,000 people being infected from receiving transfusions or blood plasma from blood donors with hepatitis C and HIV.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “The infected blood scandal is an appalling failure of the British state which we must learn from. We need to ensure the behaviour which enabled the scandal on such a horrifying scale cannot be repeated.
The Government is acutely aware of how long victims of this dreadful scandal have been waiting for compensation and is now committed to putting this right. But we need to go further and change the culture of defensiveness in the public sector and society that has denied families the justice they deserve in this scandal and others.
So I am pleased this Government is to introduce the Hillsborough Law to tackle that defensiveness to improve transparency and accountability, to make sure the public is truly at the heart of the public sector.”
