Romford Film Festival lives on despite closure of Premiere Cinema.
The much loved Romford Film Festival and Romford Horror Festival will continue despite the closure of Premiere Cinema.
It was announced yesterday that the much loved local cinema in Romford was sadly shutting its doors. However, the good news is that the two very popular film festivals will continue.
The team at the Romford Film and Horror Festivals wrote:
“You may or may not have heard that Premiere Cinema was forced to close last Friday.
We’ve had a lot of enquiries about what that means for Romford Film Festival and HorRHIFFic (Romford Horror Festival).
We created both festivals as a way of preserving the life of the cinema we played in, we wanted to do something that made Premiere Cinema and The Mercury a place you needed to be and if your a horror fan, our yearly fest in February really did become exactly what we wanted, this year Romford Horror had just under 3200 attendees.
While Premiere Cinemas may be no more, Romford’s Film Festivals will live on and we will tell you more about how that will happen after September, for now however we are just stepping out of the story. We pay our respect to the 20 odd staff who yesterday discovered they no longer had jobs, they worked incredibly hard to ensure the cinema was a great place to be, despite not necessarily having the funds to do that, budget indie cinemas need a lot of money to modernise, but at only £4 a ticket and most of that money going to the studios, it takes a long time to generate income to make change. That’s why events like RIFF, East London LGBT+ Festival, I Am were so important, because it generated revenue that never had to be passed on to other organisations.
We send our love to the entire team that worked at the cinema and want to assure them, we’ll meet again.”
