New City College celebrates after huge rise in their top grades.

Hundreds of New City College students are celebrating excellent A Level, BTEC and T Level results today – with a huge increase in the top A Level grades of A*-B.

At NCC’s Havering Sixth Form in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, 34.5% of the 1,838 A Level entries were graded A*-B, a massive increase on last year. 

And in BTEC Level 3 results there was a 94% pass rate and a total of 1,483 entries across NCC campuses, with some results still pending.  

An impressive 69 students achieved at least two Distinction* in Level 3 BTEC subjects, including Applied Science, Business, Health & Social Care, Sport, Media and the Arts. 

At Ardleigh Green campus there was a 98.3% pass rate and 172 students sitting Level 3 qualifications. At Havering Sixth Form, there was a 96.25% pass rate with 560 students sitting the Level 3 qualifications (with some results still to come) and at Rainham Construction and Engineering Centre there was a 93.5% pass rate with 46 students taking the qualifications.

In T Level Engineering and T Level Early Years Education and Childcare, there was a 100% pass rate with 9 out of 11 students achieving the best possible grade of Distinction.

New City College Principal Janet Smith said: “Sincere congratulations to the New City College class of 2024! This is a superb set of results including an impressive increase from last year in A Level high grades of A*-B and BTEC Triple Distinction*, as well as some strong T Level Distinctions. 

“These achievements reflect our students’ hard work and dedication, and unwavering support from our teaching and support staff. I have no doubt that our talented students will continue to achieve great things, whether they progress to university or into successful careers.”

Annie May O’Neill, from Havering Sixth Form, achieved 2 A* grades in Law and Politics and an A in English Language and Literature. She will be studying Law with International Business at the University of Law and will be starting an internship at an international law firm. 

She said: “Havering Sixth Form has been incredible! The teachers have guided me through every single day on the path to achieving my dream of becoming a barrister. At the start of college I would never have thought that I would be able to get A*A*A. The world is my oyster now thanks to New City College and I am so delighted!”

Another highly successful student, Muttee Mirza, also from Havering Sixth Form, achieved A*, A and B grades in Law, Politics and Spanish. He will be starting an apprenticeship at a law firm and aims to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. He said: “Havering Sixth Form College has played such a significant part in my journey. The facilities here are incredible but most importantly, the teachers have been absolute top quality.”

Miles Hayward has attended all three NCC Havering campuses – Ardleigh Green (Level 2 BTEC Engineering), Rainham Construction and Engineering Centre (Level 3 BTEC Engineering) and then Havering Sixth Form to study BTEC Information Technology. He achieved the top grade of Triple Distinction*.

He said: “I’m so pleased with my results. I’ve loved being at college. It’s a great environment and I have developed and grown so much as a person. The teachers and friends I have met have had such a positive effect on my life.”

Kianna St Cyr achieved Triple Distinction* in Level 3 Graphic Design and Photography at Ardleigh Green campus. She is aiming to work as a digital marketing or social media marketing apprentice. She praised her tutors for the encouragement they gave her throughout the course.

Muntaha Uddin will be going to study Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School after achieving a fantastic A* in Biology and 2 A grades in Chemistry and Geography. She said: “The specialised academic and pastoral support I received from my tutor in the Medics programme at Havering Sixth Form and being surrounded by like-minded people encouraged me to achieve my goals and I believe I made the right choice in coming to this college.”

Emily White will be going to study Illustration at Ravensbourne University after achieving 2 A grades in Psychology and Graphic Design and a Distinction in BTEC Digital Games Production. She said the excellent support she received at New City College has helped her achieve these grades.
