This incident once again highlights the endless challenges women face on the streets including those in Havering.

Havering, like most other London boroughs has seen its fair share of disturbances this summer including thefts, assaults, the endless fires across Rainham and the ongoing battle to stop shoplifting across our shopping centres.

Yesterday, a social media post revealed some very disturbing footage of a woman openly being followed by a male drinking in the street. The lady spoke clearly stating she did not know the individual who made no attempt to conceal the fact that he was following her. The topless male, drinking what appeared to be alcohol could be seen walking behind her, staring at her.

The man is believed to have come up to the woman, right in her face, causing her to fear he was going to bottle her. Yet, despite this incident happening in broad daylight at a busy bus stop outside of Romford police station, not one person intervened to help the lady except a pensioner who asked the man to step away and leave her alone.

Most women are sadly conditioned to some form of harassment, be it receiving unwanted comments, threats, remarks about their bodies or even physical harassment. We are used to walking home with keys in our hands ready to protect ourselves, wearing trainers, walking in well lit areas etc. None of that is new for us.

Sadly, yesterday’s social media footage once again showed how brazen these acts are and how unwilling people are to step in and support a person in need of help.

The police are doing their best to tackle violence against women, but due to their endless pressures, they are not seen on our streets as much as most residents would like across Havering and yesterday this shocking incident took place just outside the police station in Romford.

This incident once again highlights the endless challenges women face on our streets including those in Havering.

Incidents like this need to be called out and need to stop. Women have the right like everyone else to walk to a bus stop without being followed by a man drinking, coming up to her face and threatening her. This is not acceptable in any shape or form.
