Rainham library is not just a library, but a vital community centre where everyone is welcomed and supported thanks to members of staff like Jan.

Those who attend Rainham library will know a very special lady who works there-Jan Looker. Jan is not only a a cheerful and friendly face that welcomes everyone to the library, but also a great community champion.

It is thanks to Jan, that Rainham library is a focal point of the local area. It hosts regular sessions including the excellent weekly nutrition drop ins with Nutritionist Sharon Adkins, it is a warm spot where residents regularly come in the winter to have somewhere safe to sit, it hosts the Rainham Pantry, where a foodbank system runs every Wednesday and it has a free coat scheme in the winter.

It was thanks to Jan, that the coat initiative began. After seeing so many people in her community struggling with the cold, Jan set up a free coat scheme where she regularly donates free coats and jackets to those in need.

Several weeks ago, Jan received a STAR award for her contribution to her community.

A spokesperson for Havering Council told the Havering Daily:

“Jan received recognition from Council colleagues at this year’s STAR Awards for her contribution to the local community in Rainham.

“The award reflects her exceptional community focus and outreach efforts in transforming areas of the library into vibrant hubs where residents can learn, engage, and feel connected, thus reducing isolation and fostering valuable friendships.

“Other highlights include facilitating the Core20plus5 programme’s integration and organising various events which continue to showcase Rainham Library and the wider community as a whole.

“Innovative ideas, like a community jigsaw puzzle and a successful coat appeal, further highlight Jan’s commitment to inclusivity and support.

“She continues to involve service organisations and charities to assist in creating an environment where people can build friendships, learn, and receive support.”

Well done Jan! You are a true community hero.
