Dead Serious – Life is just a series of short stories: A Must-Read for Havering Residents
Born in the East End of London in the early 1950s, Stewart Perkins, a local resident and author, has captured the essence of life in Barking, Dagenham, and Havering in his latest book, Dead Serious – Life is just a series of short stories. After spending his early years with his grandparents in Chadwell Heath, Stewart’s family settled in the Eastbrook End council estate of Dagenham. This vibrant area became the backdrop for many of his humorous, melancholic, and audacious stories that chronicle life from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Stewart’s schooling at Hunters Hall and Eastbrook introduced him to a myriad of friends who shared his sense of adventure. He recalls weekends spent at Harrow Lodge pool, exploring The Chase and sandpits, catching minnows, and climbing the park’s waterfall. These experiences provided a rich tapestry of memories, which he has now woven into his engaging narratives.

Stewart’s professional journey began with training as a draughtsman, leading him to various engineering roles across London. Starting in West London, his career took him to Barking Council, then to a mechanical contractor in Park Lane, Romford, and later to engineering consultancies in Harold Wood and Brentwood. One of his notable projects included 14 months working on the construction of Romford Hospital, followed by contributions to the old Harold Wood Hospital. Before retiring, Stewart utilised 3D modelling software for precise service installations in buildings, including a massive laboratory in NW1 and the redevelopment at Battersea.
Apart from his professional achievements, Stewart is an avid sports enthusiast. His interests span football, rugby, golf, squash, darts, and distance running. He played a pivotal role in establishing ‘The Eastbrook Do It’s,’ which managed the first two Dagenham Town Show Fun Runs and Half Marathons in 1987 and 1988. His running accolades include completing two London Marathons and the New York City Marathon in 1984.

Married to a lady from Romford, Stewart and his wife are now grandparents living in Cranham. Reflecting on his life, Stewart muses, “Life is just a series of short stories.” His new book, Dead Serious – Life is just a series of short stories, paints a vivid picture of East End life over the decades, offering readers a nostalgic glimpse into the past.
