Last year officers from the Met Police went undercover in a bid to catch Rolex thieves who were targeting London’s West End. The £25,000 watch robbery made the news and Met Police officers were quick catch the two suspects.

Yesterday, the two asylum seekers, Egyptian Yousef Garef and Algerian Amin Abdelkadar, walked free.

The pair had attacked Kris Smith in Soho on 21 July last year, one grabbing Mr Smith’s watch, whilst the other stifled the victim’s cries of ‘don’t take my watch’ with his hand across his mouth. Moments later, the police detained the pair of attackers and the watch was recovered.

The pair had pleaded guilty and were handed community orders.

A case like this, once again highlights that despite quick work by officers identifying and locating the suspect involved, the perpetrators frequently walk free from court.

Stabbings, we all know have now become part of London life. As shocking as that may seem it is the reality. Suspects as we have seen, are apprehended and then given next to no sentence, with most of the communities stating phrases such as ‘what will he get? Another slap on this wrist and walk away?’ That indeed seems to be the case.

Can you imagine just how disheartening it is for our police officers to put in endless hard work to remove individuals from our streets, just to see them walk out of court. How does the victim feel to know that they have had no justice?

Yesterday’s court result is one of many where- despite clear evidence showing a person’s guilt, they walk out of court with next to no punishment.

Communities are quick to point the finger at police, however, officers do their job and yet the suspects are back out on our streets.

The spiral of not reporting to the police will now continue as communities can see that despite suspects being apprehended and police clearly doing their job, they still walk free from court.
