As the end of July approaches, we’re gearing up to bid farewell to a true legend in our community: Jon Gildersleeve! After an incredible 26 years of service at LBBD, Jon is finally retiring, and it’s time to show him just how much he means to the community.

Throughout his decades of dedication, Jon, from south Hornchurch has been the epitome of kindness, reliability, and generosity. From his enthusiasm to his tireless dedication, he has touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Jon became Honorary Freeman of the Borough for his work in Barking and Dagenham

We have covered many of Jon’s campaigns over the last couple of years, such as when he arranged for people to support our Critical Care Team by making as many knitted and stitched bears, hearts and blankets to support our local hospitals as possible or when he organised the community to knit Beanie hats to help the homeless.

But Jon isn’t just a community member; he’s the heartbeat of our neighborhood, always there to lend a helping hand, offer a kind word, or simply brighten someone’s day. His impact goes far beyond what words can describe, but when asked to sum him up in just a word or two, friends and colleagues described him as –

Enthusiastic, Considerate, Attentive, Trustworthy, Kindhearted, Helpful, Passionate, Inspirational, Honest, Resourceful, Positive, Friendly, Caring, One in a million, Dependable, Community, Exceptional, Amazing, Empathetic, Thoughtful, Persistent, One of a kind, Direct, Determined, Gentleman, Reliable, Generous, Selfless, Awesome, Kind, Resilient, Humble, Fighter, Transformational, Altruistic, Dedicated, Networker, Enabler, Community-minded, Diligent, Persevere, Tenacious, Ingenious, Astute, Extremely helpful, Adaptable.

Cheers to you, Jon – you truly are one in a million!
