Saturday, 13 July marks a significant milestone as Fleet Close Play Area in Cranham becomes the first of five community greens to receive Village Green status. This comes after Havering Residents Association (HRA) have agreed to commit to safeguarding Havering’s cherished green spaces.

Before the last local election, the HRA promised to protect the borough’s most valued green spaces, a pledge that now sees fruition with this latest development. Securing Village Green status means that any future development on these greens would require an act of parliament, thereby providing robust protection against unwanted changes.

The occasion was marked by a ceremony where a commemorative plaque was unveiled by key members of the HRA. Present at the event were the Leader of Havering, Cllr. Ray Morgon, Deputy Leader of Havering, Cllr. Gillian Ford, and Cabinet Member of Development, Regeneration and Inward Investment, Cllr. Graham Williamson. Ward councillors Phil Ruck and John Tyler, along with local residents, also attended to celebrate this momentous achievement.

Cllr. Graham Williamson highlighted the significance of this accomplishment, stating, “We promised to protect Havering’s most valued green spaces, and today we have delivered on that promise. We look forward to the other four ceremonies planned, ensuring these precious areas are preserved for future generations.”

Cllr. Gillian Ford is working closely with residents to establish a Friends group for Fleet Close Play Area. This group will play a vital role in managing future initiatives on the Green, as well as obtaining grants for improvements, ensuring the area remains a vibrant and well-maintained community space.

Fleet Close Play Area’s new status ensures that it will be preserved for future generations, allowing the community to continue enjoying this treasured green space.
