‘If you cut our libraries you cut our communities’- Residents and trade unions unite in the battle to save our libraries from closures.
SAVE OUR LIBRARIES! Trade Union Council organise library protest outside the Town Hall.
A protest was held outside the Town Hall in Romford yesterday, Tuesday 9 July, in a bid to save four libraries from closure.
Elm Park, Harold Wood, Collier Row and Gidea Park library are all facing closure as Havering council looks to cut expenditure.
The protest was organised by the Trade Union Council who gathered many of its members to join in the battle to save these libraries from closing.
Local residents are angry at council plans and have called the council out on their poor decision making stating that there are other ways to save money and that our libraries could actually start to make money if correct decisions were made by the council.
Residents stood outside the Town Hall in Romford, chanting to save our libraries and spoke openly about their objections.
Librarian Angelina Leatherbarrow, a protester at yesterday’s event, told the Havering Daily:
“Our libraries are vital to our communities. Libraries are not just about books, they are warm hubs, they are places people come to study, to see other people, to keep warm, if they can’t afford to put the heating on, they are free and for every one.
“If you cut our libraries-you cut our communities.”
