A man who targeted a care home resident with learning difficulties has been jailed for robbery and blackmail following an investigation by the Met police.

Festus Obue, 39, of Baxter Road, Beckton, was sentenced on Thursday, 6 June to six-years in prison at Snaresbrook Crown Court for two counts of robbery and one count of blackmail after being found guilty by a jury in April.

Obue first robbed the victim in October 2019 when he threatened to assault the victim unless he handed over his bank cards.

The next month, Obue threatened the victim again in the street, but this time at knifepoint, forcing the victim to hand over money.

In January 2020 Obue again threatened to attack and stab the victim if he did not hand over money.

Officers from the Met along with care workers provided support to the victim so he could bravely provide a statement and identify Obue.

During his arrest officers also seized clothing belonging to Obue which the victim described which lead to him being charged with robbery and blackmail.

Detective Sergeant Joshua Palmer, who lead the investigation, said: “Obue systematically targeted a member of our community he knew was vulnerable. Without the strength and bravery of this victim, as well as care staff at the care home, this sentence would not have been possible. I want thank the courageous victim and witnesses in this case which secured the conviction.”
