Team Girls achieve Silver and Team Boys get third spot!

Swimmers from ten schools and five local swimming clubs represented Havering this weekend at the annual London Youth Games. In a fiercely fought contest against other London Boroughs, Team Havering achieved a 3rd place in the Boys competition and an impressive Silver position for the girls. Their combined efforts secured more points than any other borough by the end of the open gala. Throughout the event there were numerous swims resulting in podium positions for Amelia Fenner, Lois Smith, Rebecca Coogan, Luca Baumslag-Grisi, Charlie Rogers, Jayden Carter, Jaime Comitti and Olivia Cooper. For the all the relay events, Team Havering placed in the top three with both the senior boys and girls 4x 50m freestyle teams claiming gold. Presenting the swimmers with medals was Team GB Olympian Alice Dearing.

Team Havering’s Swim Manager said: “I am incredibly lucky to be able to bring together such a talented group of young swimmers for this annual event. They are a credit to their schools, their clubs and their parents, who coach and motivate them to participate at such a high standard. For some of these swimmers, it was the first time swimming in a 50 meter pool, which is a big step up from their weekly swimming lessons. Each and every one of them is an ambassador of the sport.”

Following the main competition, a small team of novice swimmers from local schools experienced the excitement of racing for the very first time at the prestigious London Aquatic Centre in the 50m Olympic pool. Racing in the same water that has seen world records broken from athletes such as Michael Phelps, Ellie Simmons and Adam Peaty, these swimmers certainly got a taste for the sport and could develop into the aquatic Olympic Campions of the future.

The London Youth Games is a charity organisation providing experiences and life-changing opportunities for all young Londoners using the power of sport. You can find out more about participating in swimming and other sports on their website www.londonyouthgames.org/
