Havering is flying the Armed Forces flag to mark the beginning of Armed Forces week.

Yesterday, members of Havering’s community including Andrew Rosindell, Margaret Mullane, Julia Lopez, and Andrew Achilleos came together outside of the Town Hall in Romford to watch Mayor Councillor Gerry O Sullivan raise the Armed Forces flag.

Havering Police-Acting Chief Inspector Routley was also present at the flag raising alongside Havering’s Leader of the Councillor-Councillor Ray Morgon, Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Councillor Gillan and Oscar Ford.

Also present was Harold Hill community champion Jan Sargent and Sidra Naeem and other members of the Havering Islamic Cultural Centre.

The annual celebration gives thanks to the dedication of our armed forces, who serve to keep us all safe.

The Armed Forces events are also an opportunity for everyone to show their support for the men and women of our forces past and present.

Havering will once again show appreciation this Armed Forces Day, Saturday 29 June, with a parade starting at 10.30am on South Street’s junction with Arcade Place, finishing at Havering Town Hall, Romford.

Among those marching will be currently serving troops, veterans and cadets, as well as Service families.

Mayor of Havering, Councillor Gerry O’Sullivan, said:

“It is an honour to raise the flag today in dedication of His Majesty’s Armed Forces as it serves as a reminder of the continued contribution of our troops.

“From those currently serving, to veterans, cadets and service families, the sacrifice, hard work and courage our armed forces show in risking their lives to keep us safe should never be forgotten.

“We are proud to raise the Armed Forces flag in recognition of all our heroes involved in past and present conflicts – from RAF Hornchurch where so many pilots became national heroes in both world wars, to Black, Asian and minority ethnic personnel from fellow commonwealth nations.

“Havering’s appreciation for the armed forces remains as strong as ever, and flying this flag in addition to the Armed Forces Day Parade marks our support to all servicemen and servicewomen across the United Kingdom.”
