Your barbershop is more than just a place for haircuts; it is a trusted place where personal relationships thrive over weeks, months or even years.

Today, Harold Hill barber and community champion Simon Ford writes in the Havering Daily on a special meeting hosted by Havering Council for men’s mental health.

Tom Chapman who founded a mental health charity The Lions Barber Collective after his friend committed suicide, was invited by Havering Council to give a Mental Health talk to Barbers from Havering on how Barbers often listen and talk about Men mental health issues. Tom illustrated in greater detail how barbers can help customers who are struggling with mental health problems,

The Public Health Service at Havering Council, in collaboration with the Lions Barber Collective, was thrilled to announce Barber Talk Live, a suicide prevention training course that fuses mental health and barbering education. Our mission is to empower local barbers like myself at Tops Barbers in Harold Hill, to recognise the signs of poor mental health and provide crucial support to our valued clients. We spend quite a bit of personal time with our clients, our customers tell us things that they don’t even tell their friends or love ones, it is sometimes a very unique bond between barbers and clients.

In England and Wales, the biggest killer of men under 50 is suicide, and 3 in 4 of all suicides are men. Suicides are preventable, and we believe that barbers play a pivotal role in fostering environments where men feel comfortable discussing the stressors of everyday life and their mental health. Your barbershop is more than just a place for haircuts; it is a trusted place where personal relationships thrive over weeks, months or even years.
