‘If people put their faith in me to be the new Labour MP for Romford, I will make sure that Labour’s plan to ‘take back our streets’ means more investment here.’

This week The Havering Daily is asking all Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for the three Havering areas, Romford,Hornchurch and Upminster and Dagenham and Rainham to share their views on how to tackle the knife crime epidemic.

Today, Romford Labour candidate Andrew Achilleos shares his views.

Knife crime and antisocial behaviour is becoming an all too familiar headline in places like Romford, and it is time for change.

Since 2010 the Tories have cut funding for the Metropolitan Police by over £1bn, and cuts to local authorities has seen a reduction in council spending on youth services of 40%. Over the same period knife crime has gone up by 34%.

Tackling knife crime and keeping our streets safe is paramount, and if people put their faith in me to be the new Labour MP for Romford, I will make sure that Labour’s plan to ‘take back our streets’ means more investment here.

Labour will crack down on the sale of offensive weapons such as zombie knives and will introduce tougher sentencing for those found in possession of them. I will fight to make sure police visibility is increased across the constituency, but it is also important to recognise that we can’t arrest our way out of violent crime.

That is why I will also be calling for more investment in youth hubs and mental health services, working alongside local organisations and the community to tackle the underlying causes of crime in Romford.
