“The life of carers is tough enough and they deserve all the support possible.”

Dagenham and Rainham’s Labour MP, Jon Cruddas, has written to the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities, to highlight a potential historical issue affecting and disadvantaging carers across England.

Mr Cruddas told the Havering Daily: “One of my constituents alerted me to the fact that his local authority had failed to properly apply changes from 2013 that would have entitled him, as a carer for his disabled father, to an exemption to paying Council Tax. While he was able to resolve this and claim back the money he was entitled to, he was rightly concerned that this situation may have affected many other households across the nation that were not aware of the changes”.

In addition to raising this with the Secretary of State, asking for the government to ensure that all local authorities are compliant with the legislation, Jon has also alerted the Citizens Advice Bureau to the potential issue so that any wrongs done to carers in this way can be put right.

Jon added: “Organisations such as the CAB, alongside other bodies including Carers UK, assist people in this situation every day, and no doubt they will be encouraging people to check their own circumstances to make sure they are not losing out.

The life of carers is tough enough and they deserve all the support possible.”
