Romford football team make all of Havering proud with their amazing win!

Derek Robinson writes a brief report on Romford FC’s Wembley victory on Saturday.

Romford won the F A Vase at Wembley with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Essex Senior League rivals Great Wakering Rovers. Borough were dominant pretty much throughout the contest but there was no score at half-time despite Finlay Dorrell (twice), Adalberto Pinto and Kris Newby all going close to scoring in the first half hour or so. Great Wakering didn’t really have a shot worth speaking of until close to half time when Talbot had a shot deflected wide and Boylan was woefully wide when well-placed.

Romford took the lead early in the second half when Wakering were caught trying to play the ball out of defence and Dunn’s poor pass was intercepted by Charlie Morris, who played in Hassan Nalbant to open the scoring after 52 minutes. Three minutes later it was 2-0 after Great Wakering had claims for a penalty turned down for a challenge by Junior Luke on Talbot, and Romford broke upfield with Nalbant putting in Dorrell whose shot was saved by Shamshoum only for man of the match Sam Deering to pick up the loose ball and find the net. Darren Phillips deflected a shot wide for a corner shortly afterwards but Great Wakering rarely threatened after that, and Boro put the game to bed three minutes into stoppage time when substitute Toheeb Elegushi put Nalbant clean through to make it 3-0.

Manager Dan Spinks had said that after the disappointment of losing a promotion playoff final and a league cup final in the previous six days, they were determined not to finish the season with nothing. Whereas he would not have taken losing the playoffs and winning at Wembley at the start of the week, he said he had definitely changed his mind after this.

Romford team : Jake Anderson; Junior Luke, Remi Sutton, Darren Phillips, Scott Doe; Kris Newby (c), Adalberto Pinto, Sam Deering; Charlie Morris, Finlay Dorrell, Hassan Nalbant. Subs Toheeb Elegushi (for Dorrell, 67), Ash Siddik (for Pinto, 70), Lee Hursit (for Sutton, 82), Jacob Wiggins, Jamie Hursit, Daniel Nakipov-Getmansky, Danny Hurford not used.
