Bereaved mum and anti knife crime campaigner Sue Hedges wins ‘Woman of Courage’ award at Barking and Dagenham Council’s Empowerment Awards.
Havering anti knife crime campaigner and bereaved mother Sue Hedges has won Barking and Dagenham’s ‘Woman of Courage’ award. Sue was part of the ninth’s Women’s Empowerment Awards hosted by Barking and Dagenham Council and handed the special award on Monday evening.
The finalists were selected by a panel of judges who faced the challenging task of determining the ultimate winners across nine categories.
Sue has worked closely with Barking and Dagenham Council installing Daniel Baird Bleed Kits across the area and is frequently seen doing anti knife crime work.
A huge well done to Sue who really is a brave and courageous woman. Despite losing her son Ricky Hayden to knife crime in 2016, Sue has spent everyday out on the streets of London campaigning against knife crime. Not only is she an amazing woman, but also a local legend who works tirelessly against knife crime in a desperate bid to stop the violence on our streets.
Sue is now donating the vital life saving Daniel Baird bleed kits across London to as many destinations as she can in the hope that they will save a life. The kits are used to prevent catastrophic bleeding and thanks to Sue, two of the kits she donated, have saved lives.
Sue, you really do deserve this award and really are a woman of courage. You overcome incredible grief everyday to help and support so many others. The Havering community thanks you too for everything you do all across London.

Sue told the Havering Daily: “Thank you to Barking and Dagenham Council for this incredible award. I am honoured. Thank you to Lynne Baird for all her support with the Daniel Baird bleed kit and thank you to the community for all their help.”
