Rainham community meeting held to address residents fears after ongoing incidents of muggings and anti social behaviour.
A Rainham resident and former teacher of 30 years, Sue Watson, attended the community meeting held at Harris Academy on Friday 22 March, organised to address the concerns of parents and residents following a spate of incidents over the last few months.
Led by Police Superintendent Simon Hutchinson, the officer leading on Neighbourhood Policing in Havering, residents raised concerns not just around the school but also around vulnerable people in and around the Tesco store in Viking Way.
Sue told the Havering Daily: “The council has a role here in supporting vulnerable people.” Superintendent Hutchinson echoed this by referencing the Adult Safeguarding Board he sits on. It was also raised “Tesco has a role to play here. They have to report all shoplifting offences and other incidents that occur. They have to play their part.”
A recurring theme for residents who had attended was how the police can more effectively communicate the work they are doing with residents. It was pointed out that not everyone is online, and that even the people that are using social media are not using every channel that the police use, so information being shared more widely would help public confidence.
Sue added: “iI is important to report all crimes”. This was echoed by Mr Hutchinson as increased reporting could support how areas are policed. Further, it was pointed out “the importance of using 101 and Crimestoppers in reporting is how we can play our part and support our neighbourhood police.”
Rainham and Wennington residents who want to take an active role in deciding the priorities for their Neighbourhood Policing Team can attend the forthcoming Ward Panel, a resident-led meeting which allows local people to put their concerns directly to the Police.
The next ward panel meeting for Rainham & Wennington is at 6pm on the 23 April, at the Methodist Church in Wennington Road.
