Why police officers spend hours of their day dealing with idiots.

Yesterday afternoon, a large group of police officers gathered on the streets of an east London borough to tackle anti social behaviour, theft and numerous other ongoing issues in the area. The officers were all smart, well turned out and eagerly ready to start their shift and tackle offenders as they came.

The officers stood outside a local shopping centre waiting to be sent to their different destinations and as they waited, an individual arrived at considerable speed in his vehicle to park in a disabled car parking space, despite numerous non disabled parking spaces around him. He clearly saw many officers directly in front of him, watching him park and still chose to park in the disabled space. As he exited his car, one of the officers nearest to him, politely approached him and said “Sorry sir you are parked in a disabled bay.” The man kissed his teeth at the officer, dismissed her like she was worthless and replied with an all time classic, “Whatever.”

At this, he entered the shop regardless of his actions. Officers then chatted amongst each other and a ticket was started to be issued. As the officer was writing out the ticket, the man left the shop and aggressively approached the officer, stating “What are you doing?”. She replied “I am issuing a ticket sir, we informed you that you had parked in a disabled bay.” The man became very aggressive and started gesticulating, and told the officers to “F**k off”, or commonly known as Foxtrot Oscar.

Officers were polite and carried on talking to the man, asking for his driving license, which he failed to produce. He then continued being abusive to officers, shouting “Get your breathe out of my face, you’re pathetic, why don’t you f**k off.”

This carried on as the individual got louder for all shoppers to see and officers continued to be calm and polite and kept explaining that they needed a proof of ID. Shoppers who walked by were also fed up with individual and one noted, “I don’t know how they deal with people like this everyday, must drive you crazy.”

The whole incident could have been avoided if the man in question had been polite instead of abusive, or had not parked in a disabled bay which ultimately is not acceptable. It may not be the biggest crime committed, however, for those with blue badges who do struggle to find spaces, it is people like this man and his selfish careless actions, that cause endless problems for them.

This scenario is just one of so many that officers deal with everyday. For shoppers watching who were fed up listening to the man and his endless, empty, non stop talk, imagine having to deal with this type of individual regularly. People who knowling are in the wrong and instead of acknowledging it, persit on being rude and abusive to officers.

They say that policing is a job like no other. Well, it certainly is. These officers were a credit to the Met. They were polite, patient and calm at all times, despite the abuse they faced and the need for the individual to draw attention to himself.

It is sad to see people who join the police with such good intentions and to make a difference in our community, be repeatedly abused verbally by ultimately idiots who waste everyone’s time.
