Earlier this week, Sam Holland, Conservative candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt ahead of next week’s Spring Budget.Sam raised with him the need to reform the local government funding formula so that Havering can see fairer funding to meet its budgetary needs in the longer term. Sam also re-iterated Havering’s request for immediate financial support to deal with the specific shortfall it has. That support package has since been approved.

Tax cuts were also discussed, and Sam encouraged the Chancellor to target these at low- and middle-income earners so that more money is put directly in people’s pockets. Abolishing or significantly reforming the non-dom tax status could be a means through which to help fund any tax cutting measures for workers. Sam also urged support for our pubs and social clubs and suggested lowering alcohol duty on draught beer and cider.

Speaking of the local government funding formula and Havering’s request for a loan, Sam Holland said: “Since being selected as the Conservative candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, I’ve tried to have a good relationship with Havering Council. Despite it being run by the Resident’s Association and the Labour Party, I recognise that the council has needed support to address an acute funding gap arising in large part through an outdated funding formula. The formula also needs to work for the longer term, rather than focus on individual year settlements. I made this case to the Chancellor and hope to see the Government make the necessary reforms.”
