“He would go and get his paper every morning. He was such a lovely gentleman,” were the words left by one Harold Wood resident paying their respects to 87 year old Bernard Fowler.

Bernard was murdered as he walked to Harold Wood station, as he did every morning to get his paper. Since his tragic death on Tuesday, residents in Harold Wood have been left shocked and angered by this horrific act of violence on an innocent elderly man. Flowers have been laid outside the station in respect to Bernard.

“It really is horrendous, that could have been my grandad, how can anyone do such a terrible thing to a pensioner?” were the words of another Harold Wood resident.

It is believed Bernard used a walking stick to help him get about the community and had lived many years in the Harold Wood area.

“I can’t believe such an awful thing would happen in our community. Why did this man come all the way from Brent Cross to do this horrendous act?”

The police have said that this was an isolated incident, however Havering residents have had numerous isolated incidents of late such as two stabbings in one day, an assault, an acid attack and now a brutal murder, that has left them very concerned about what is going on in their borough.

RIP Bernard-out thoughts are with his family.
