Today in the Havering Daily, Chair of the HRA, Councillor Gillian Ford writes about HRA’s Commitment to Improving Children’s Services.

Here in Havering, we are committed to providing the best possible services for all our residents, and our children’s services are no exception. With the appointment of a new Director last Autumn, we’ve taken decisive steps to address historical issues and make significant improvements.

Recognising the challenges dating back to 2018, we understand that transforming our children’s services will require both investment and a comprehensive delivery plan. Despite these obstacles, we are determined to deliver positive change and ensure the well-being of every child in our community.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed, as OFSTED has acknowledged the progress we’ve made so far. However, we recognise that there is still much work to be done. Access to funding for social care remains a significant challenge, as our resources often fall short of meeting the growing demand for services.

Except from the Ofsted report where it acknowledges the progress made by the council recently.

Despite these challenges, we are fully committed to improving our children’s services and will continue to advocate for fair funding from the government. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential, and we will spare no effort in ensuring that they receive the support and care they need.

Together, with the dedication of our staff, the support of our community, and ongoing collaboration with government and partner agencies, we are confident that we can build a brighter future for the children of Havering. Our journey towards excellence in children’s services is just beginning, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on the lives of our youngest residents.

What surprises me is that the cabinet member for Children – Oscar Ford – has ducked out of replying on behalf of HRA. He’s been there since May 2022 and the question is: What did HE know and when? The direction of travel must have been apparent for a considerable period of time – what leadership did he provide?
