Met Police Special Constable’s poor actions do not reflect the many other excellent volunteer constables across London.
A video of a Met Police Special Constable informing members of the public they could not sing church songs outside of church and then revolting sticking her tongue out at the camera has circulated social media non stop yesterday. It rightly, left even police supporters quite disgusted, with officers from other forces actually questioning if it was a spoof. Sadly, we know it was not.
Comments as always on the social media world, got out of hand and it wasn’t long before the personal attacks began. Not acceptable. This officer’s actions were quite simply completely misguided and incorrect. Her actions were poor and members of the public will have shaken their heads in despair.
The question here is how such a poorly trained person was allowed on the streets wearing a uniform? She is a special constable which means she volunteers her time, which is to be commended, especially during a time when the police are struggling to recruit. However, the officer clearly needs training and guidance in her role as a special constable. There are many, many outstanding special constables across London whose role is invaluable to our communities. These officers give up their own time to support our communities and on a whole do a thankless job most weekends.
Sadly, this incident has highlighted special constables in a negative light which they should not be. Being a police officer is undoubtedly the hardest job in our community. It is certainly the most thankless and yet ironically one of the most vital in our society. Ultimately, these individuals save lives and continue to do so despite the daily barrage of abuse they face be it verbally or physically.
It was indeed last year that we saw two police officers run into a burning building to save lives without any concerns for their own well being or safety.
This officer’s actions were completely incorrect and misguided-let us hope that her senior officers now chose fit to advise her correctly of her responsibilities when wearing that uniform across the London streets.
