Romford and Hornchurch Councillors call for correction and clarity over mistaken parking charges.
Conservative Councillors in Romford and Hornchurch are calling on Havering Council to correct a mistake in this year’s parking charges, which is causing a decline in the fortunes of small local shops in both towns.
Councillor Judith Holt (St. Alban’s Ward) worked with Bencrest Chemist in Park Lane in Hornchurch to gather and present a petition of over five hundred signatures to install the free first half-hour parking at the On-Street Pay-and-Display Bays outside the row of shops, which was presented at the Full Council Meeting on 22nd November 2023.
Councillor Holt told the Havering Daily:
“In last year’s Budget 2023-2024, Hornchurch is included in the list of those On-Street Pay and Display Bays to have ‘no charge for 0-30 mins’ and in last week’s Havering Digest, it says: Residents will still be eligible for the free 30 minutes parking in on-street parking bays and council car parks, except in Romford,” said Councillor Holt. “Also, the list from the Havering Website circulated by Cabinet Members shows there have been two errors – Park Lane and Kyme Road are both in Hornchurch but the half-hour free parking has been omitted. So, all that is needed is an admission of the error and the free 30 minutes be given to these two roads. Simple and straightforward – but, unfortunately, the HRA/Labour Cabinet Members are just blaming previous Administrations and won’t give us straight answers.”
Councillor Holt and fellow Conservative Councillors Councillor Viddy Persaud, Councillor Timothy Ryan and Councillor David Taylor are, also, calling on Havering Council to define ROMFORD as per the parking policy. “Does the Administration mean ‘Romford Town Centre’ or the whole Romford postal district? They won’t say, ” added Councillor Holt. “All we are asking for is correction and clarification for the sake of our residents and small businesses.”
