Join us as we delve into the life of a world-renowned para-swimmer who continues to make an indelible mark in the world of sports.

How did you first get involved in para-swimming?

I used to swim for a club. I was always told that I was lazy on my left side as it doesn’t work like my right hand side and it wasn’t until I was spotted by swim England who noticed my disability that they suggested that I put myself forward for classification.

Can you tell us about your main events and the challenges you face in each?

Certainly! My main events are the 100 meters breaststroke, 200 meters individual medley, and 400 meters front crawl. Each event has its own set of challenges, but I love the variety. My left-sided hemiplegia does present challenges, but I’ve learned to adapt my technique to make the most of my strengths.

You’ve achieved remarkable success, being a four-time world champion and holding five world records. What does this level of accomplishment mean to you?

It means everything to me. To be able to overcome obstacles and compete at the highest level is a dream come true. The world records are a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my training.

Can you give us a glimpse into your weekly training routine?

Absolutely. I spend a minimum of 13 hours a week in the pool, focusing on refining my technique and building endurance. Additionally, I dedicate 4 hours a week to land-based training, which includes strength and conditioning exercises to enhance overall fitness.

What drives you to keep pushing yourself in para-swimming?

I love challenging myself and discovering what I can achieve. Para swimming has given me a platform to defy expectations and show that determination knows no bounds. It’s a constant journey of self-discovery and improvement.

Away from the pool, what are your interests and hobbies?

I’m a big animal lover, and I enjoy spending time with my pets. Baking is another passion of mine – there’s something therapeutic about creating delicious treats. I also have a fascination with murder documentaries. And, of course, anything related to water, be it aquariums or the beach, brings me immense joy.

What’s your favorite food?

Minted lamb chops are my absolute favorite! I could eat them every day. And I can’t resist a Christmas dinner with turkey wrapped in bacon – it’s a classic! I am supported by Hawkins and Sons Butchers (www.hawkinsbutchers.co.uk/) who ensure I have all the protein needed for my training.

Are there any pet peeves or dislikes you’d like to share?

I’m quite organized, and being late or unorganized is something I strongly dislike. I have a timeline for absolutely everything in my life, and it helps me stay focused and on track.

And there you have it, a glimpse into the life and thoughts of Brock Whiston, a para-swimmer who defies expectations and continues to make waves in the world of para-swimming.

We wish Brock all the luck for 2024, and look forward to what this year holds for her. Go Brock!
