Winter Food Event in Orchard Village: A Resounding Success!
The recent collaboration between Orchard Village and the Felix Project culminated in an incredibly successful winter food event, leaving a positive impact on numerous local residents.
Held at the Mardyke Community Centre on 21st December 2023, the event provided an array of high-quality surplus food, all free of charge, thanks to the concerted efforts of various community organisations and volunteers.
The primary aim of the event was to combat food wastage by redistributing surplus yet perfectly edible food to local residents. The offerings were diverse, ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to pantry staples, chilled items, and even frozen foods. While much of the food was short-dated, a significant portion was freezable, ensuring its longevity for future use.
An air of anticipation surrounded the event as it was a “Pot Luck” scenario, with the actual available items remaining a delightful surprise until they arrived. However, one thing was certain—it was all top-quality, thoroughly date-checked, and completely free for the taking.

Community participation played a pivotal role in the event’s success. Volunteers and representatives from various organizations, including Havering Changing, LB Havering, Clarion Futures, MYCA, Rainham Foodbank, and local councillors, worked hand in hand to ensure the smooth running of the distribution.
The event saw a considerable turnout, with locals arriving at the Community Centre armed with carrier bags, eager to benefit from this generous initiative. Despite the high demand, organisers ensured fairness by encouraging individuals to take only what they needed, ensuring that as many people as possible could benefit from the available resources.

The spirit of community and collaboration was evident throughout the event, fostering a sense of togetherness and support among Orchard Village residents. Attendees not only received essential groceries but also had the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea while selecting and bagging their items.
The success of this winter food event not only provided much-needed support to local residents but also stood as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. It showcased how collective efforts can make a tangible difference in addressing issues like food wastage and ensuring that resources are utilized to benefit those in need.
