All coppers are not bastards-calls for police abolishment fall flat once again.
All Coppers Are Definitely Not Bastards, what they are is over worked, over stretched, underpaid and not supported.
Most weekends London is riddled with a combination of knife crime or now, shootings. Scenes of police tape and blood on the floor is a common occurrence. Let us change the narrative slightly now and go with the scenario of another teenager stabbed multiple times. Passers by rush to their aid and call the emergency services. The majority of the time, it will be a police vehicle that will arrive to the scene first and provide life saving first aid and talk to the victim, as they lie on the floor. Some sadly, despite desperate attempts from police officers and paramedics, do not make it, some do. But now, imagine that the police do not come, why? Because the calls by some, of the abolishment of the police have been adhered to. That leaves paramedics, that are extremely stretched, to rush to the scene. But then, who investigates this brutal attack? Who or what replaces our police force?
Last year, a police officer in the East Area Command Unit was given a bravery award for tackling a man with a sword that left the officer with lasting injuries. Last summer two police officers were brutally stabbed in Leicester Square when a passer by reported a man attempting to rob him carrying a knife. The two officers were left with multiple injuries after they rushed in to detain the man. Again, imagine these officers were not there, who would have stopped this violent individual from stabbing others as he attempted to rob them?
Calls of police abolishment came on a day when some individuals actually celebrated a ‘All Coppers Are Bastards Day’. Imagine actually brandishing every single individual a bastard for being a police officer.
For those that do call for police abolishment, what are the plans to replace our police force? Society is already showing that our health and social services industry is extremely underfunded. We know police vehicles are used to transport patients to hospitals, police officers undertake social worker’s roles frequently. Do those calling for this abolishment actually know the level of police work that is ingrained in our society? Are they aware of the policing work? Clearly the answer is no. We have already seen police officers being used as mental health workers due to the shortage of mental health staff, police vehicles used as ambulances, and police officers providing vital life saving first aid.
There are thousands of police officers across our country whose work is not just important, but vital to our communities. Ultimately, they save lives.
All Coppers Are Definitely Not Bastards, what they are is over worked, over stretched, underpaid and not supported. They are thankfully appreciated by so many more than those who call for the abolishment of the police or label them with this despicable title.
These officers choose to save lives in the community- what have you done for your community today?
