The London Borough of Havering now officially has over 500 Health Champions! The Health Champion training is run by Age UK and local ladies Sharon and Suzannah who do a truly fantastic job in our community.

‘My Health Matters’ is a community project that helps to improve the health awareness of local residents by recruiting and training Health Champion Volunteers. These Health Champions are then able to provide signposting to relevant services and also encourage and support residents to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Anyone over the age of 18 years old can become a Health Champion who lives in Havering. This one day training run by Sharon and Suzannah gives residents an incredible in depth knowledge on health issues, nutrition, and local support services. It really encourages people to look after their health and well being and provides locals with high quality accredited training with the option to gain further qualifications.

The one day training course, is not only extremely informative, but also very enjoyable and gives people from all backgrounds, the chance to come together and make new friendships.

A Hornchurch residents who recently undertook the Health Champion training, told the Havering Daily: “This course has actually changed my life. I met Sharon and Suzannah in Rainham at an event and asked if I could train as a health champion which I did. From there, my life has changed for the positive and their knowledge has taught me so much.

“I also undertook the nutrition course which the ladies run, that was fantastic and very informative.

“Thanks to these two courses, I have not only made new friends, but I now have gained a lot of knowledge and am able to help others in the community.”
