Special Feature: ‘This menorah will bring light to the world.’ Havering’s first official menorah lighting at the Town Hall.
‘Let us always cherish and remember our Judaic Christian heritage our country proudly has’-Andrew Rosindell MP.

For the first time in Havering’s history, a menorah was lit to celebrate Chanukah yesterday, December 12, outside the Town Hall in Romford. After much controversy, the menorah was proudly installed outside the Town Hall building and officially lit yesterday evening following a special ceremony led by Redbridge Rabbi Sufrin and Romford Synagogue’s Rabbi Lee Sunderland.

Hundreds of members of all communities came out to witness this historic event and join in the Chanukah celebrations with our Jewish community. The special lighting ceremony saw speeches by Havering’s Mayor Councillor Stephanie Nunn, Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon and a very emotive speech by the Romford MP Andrew Rosindell who spoke about the importance of celebrating diversity and the freedom our country allows people to celebrate all Faiths.

Hundreds came out to witness this important event and join in the celebrations that saw the singing of many songs to celebrate Chanukah and bring light across Havering.

Thanks were given to members of Havering Council for their hard work and our local Romford Town Centre police team led by Sergeant Gaskin for their support.

This was an evening of celebrations, festivity, peace for all members of the community and the chance to bring a sense of hope and light to all. After the ceremony, the community was invited to celebrate further at the Romford Synagogue with Rabbi Lee and Rabbi Sufrin.
