EXCLUSIVE: Elderly and disabled residents left without heating or hot water for ten days at Romford sheltered accommodation.
‘It shouldn’t have to be like this, we are elderly and disabled here, they left us with no heating as temperatures dropped below zero.‘
Nearly a hundred residents who are elderly and disabled were left with no heating or hot water for ten days. The residents who live at Brook Lodge, a sheltered housing accommodation, were left without heat during the coldest week the area has faced so far.
Numerous residents contacted the Havering Daily, to inform us of how bad the conditions were at the property on Medora Road.
One resident who did not wish to be named, said: “This happens every year. It really is shocking. We have a 94 year old lady and she was told to boil a kettle and use that to wash with. She can’t even hold a kettle!
“We have told them that the place is cold, the temperatures fall at night and we don’t even have hot water to wash with. No one cares.”
The Romford residents felt that despite their numerous calls for help, nothing was done.
“We were told that after nine days, if there still was no heating or hot water, then heaters would be given out.
“We have had engineers come and fix it, but nothing. On one occasion, it began to work for a few hours and then it stopped again. This does happen every year.”
Romford MP Andrew Rosindell and his office team have been working with residents to get this situation resolved as quickly as possible. It is their intervention last week, that has now seen the heating and hot water returned.
“Thankfully we now have our heat and hot water back after ten days and are very grateful to our local MP for his help. It shouldn’t have to be like this, we are elderly and disabled here, they left us with no heating as temperatures dropped below zero. No heaters we offered, just got told to boil a kettle. It’s not right, people don’t care.”
The Havering Daily has approached L & Q, owners of Brook Lodge for a comment, but have not received one so far.
