Parents unite outside the Town Hall in Romford in the battle to save their children’s school transport.

Last month, Havering Council proposed to stop paying for taxis for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and also cut the number of journeys it funds.

The council also stated that it would introduce clear eligibility criteria to significantly reduce how many school bus trips the borough funds.

This has left parents of children with disabilities not only very angry, but also very anxious as they do not know how their child will be able to access education, closing another door in their face.

Yesterday, 8 November, parents gathered outside the Town Hall, Romford to voice their anger, frustration and anxiety at the future of their child’s education.

Children proudly joined their parents in the battle to save their transport.

Ruth Kettle Frisby recently shared her anxiety and concerns over these cuts to transport for one of her children.

“Opportunities for disabled children to travel to school are deeply inequitable as it is, when compared to non disabled children. Non disabled children have all sorts of transport access and a greater choice of schools.

“Parents end up giving up their careers to take their children to school. The bottom line is that disabled children face multiple challenges in their everyday lives. Funded school transport provision should be a right for all disabled children .

“Havering Council must protect our children’s rights.”
