Has Gallows Corner- the fifty year old temporary flyover been forgotten once again?

Havering is often known for its beautiful parks and green spaces, it is also known for having a flyover that was temporarily built, known as Gallows Corner, that has been there for fifty years! Quite a remarkable achievement!

Harold Hill resident David Ainsworth today shares with us his frustrations on this flyover and asks if it has been forgotten once again?

Although promised a proper solution to our infamous Gallows Corner roundabout, which is a daily and dangerous misery, recent announcements saw this downgraded to a replacement new flyover for an existing ramshackle one, as erected 53 years’ ago with a 15 years’ shelf-life.  Opinions expressed locally pointed out a straight replacement would leave vehicle movements on this roundabout at the same levels – and rising. Latest rumours speculate even this unacceptable remedy is to be further downgraded to yet another refurbishment of a run down rusty temporary flyover which has a temporary speed restriction, weight restriction and too often is closed for endless remedial work to keep it propped up.
At October’s Conservative Party Conference Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised £36 billion saved by scrapping much of HS2 would be spent on other transport projects, and he reeled off a list of roads which will benefit.  No mention of Gallows Corner, which urgently needs a major project to cope with traffic volumes using this roundabout.  I’ve called on local MPs to ensure this junction is added to our PM’s spending list, now a vast sum is suddenly available, as the last thing needed is just a patched-up existing construction.

Many politicians have stood at the usual spot for a perfunctory photograph in order to attract votes by promising a solution. Sadly most, though not all (who were mainly Conservative candidates), then failed to campaign further.

Will Gallows Corner roundabout and flyover ever be refurbished correctly we ask?
