Two Upminster residents made it their mission to save outlets in Upminster Park that are historic World War II buildings. Thanks to Patricia and Brian and help from Martin and Tony from the RAF Heritage site in Hornchurch, these buildings have now become Grade II listed buildings.

Eighteen months ago, Patricia and Brian began the process to have these buildings saved and become Grade II listed, to stop them from possibly being demolished. With the help of Tony and Martin who provided more knowledge of the buildings and their use, they were able to be saved.

The buildings are currently being used by council workers as store rooms, but were once an an ARP base and a gas de-contamination area.

The Havering Daily joined Patricia, Brian, Martin and Tony yesterday, 26 September to have a look inside the two buildings.

They have incredible historical value and would be a great resource for schools studying World War II and the impacts it had locally.

The Air Raid Precaution centre and de -contamination area still contain the original inside furnishings that include original showers to wash the gas away, and an area for stretchers to be placed. Both buildings hold incredible amounts of history that rightly deserve to be preserved.

Well done to these community members whose long battle has save these two historic buildings and will now allow residents the chance to learn more about their history.
