‘Identifying how many young carers there are in Havering and just how we can help them.’
Havering Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care Councillor Gillian Ford, today writes in the Havering Daily on the borough’s need to identify how many young carers there are across the borough.
We recently saw a blog questioning the Cabinets knowledge around young carer numbers. The simple answer is that the true numbers are unknown.
The numbers GP’s currently have on their records is not the number we believe there are within the community.
That is why within the ‘All Age Carers Strategy’ in collaboration with Havering Placed Partnership we want to identify what the true numbers are and how we can help.
The difficulty is that people don’t think of themselves as carers they are son’s, daughters, husbands, wives, sisters brothers aunts uncles, friends. They are loved ones and don’t recognise or associate themselves as an official carer. This can mean that they are not getting the information, support and financial support that they could be entitled to.
Carers are priceless, they give so much back to families and loved ones, easing the financial impact on the wider community. But we cannot abuse this and recognise the need to support them and their own wellbeing.
The recent launch of the Carers Strategy aims to reach out and identify and sign-post ‘carers’ to signing up to the ‘Carers Hub’ so we can get help out to as many carers as possible.
The Young Carers Support Service Is due to start in December working with those young carers currently known and as part of the contract they will be working to identify those young carers that have not previously been known by services . Once identified, support, training and advice will be put into place so that they can reach their full potential and not miss out on childhood experiences and learning.
