A theatre with a difference and a chance to explore a hidden local treasure is coming to Havering!
Put on a pair of headphones, meet your tour guide and walk through the stunning natural landscape of Bedfords Park – a nature reserve on the edge of a city. In this guided walk and theatre show you never know who’s going to jump out from behind the next bush!

Through your headphones you’ll eavesdrop on a married couple trying to rekindle their flame, estate agents selling the dream and a botanist protecting the plants. But how are they all connected? And what has brought them to Havering’s incredible nature reserve? How do we protect the nature we have whilst trying to survive in difficult times? What are we protecting and why? In a world where nature needs our help but people’s lives are under more and more pressure, what small act can change the world?

Featuring music, poetry and drama this show is silent disco meets promenade theatre meets David Attenborough wildlife extravaganza.

Originally made in 2021 responding to two different nature reserves in the East of England. Murmurations was reworked for Teesmouth National Nature Reserve as part of Hartlepool Waterfront Festival in July 2022. Now reimagined for the Havering area this Autumn. The production brings together outdoor theatre experts Tangled Feet, with its long history of site-specific and site-responsive work, with playwright and academic Steve Waters (The Contingency Plan) in a collaboration that explores the importance on the natural world on all our lives, and particularly in the time of Covid. An original score has been written by Polly Wight, whose 2019 album ‘Sing as the Crow Flies’ was picked as one of The Guardian’s Albums of the Year, with sound design by Guy Connelly.

Director Nathan Curry said: “We are thrilled to be re-staging Murmurations in Bedfords Park this September. An historic site with a history that reaches from King John, through World War Two to the current protected Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Expect to spot Dragonflies, Deer and maybe even a Kingfisher alongside our promenade performances! Murmurations explores how defending the natural world often collides with personal cost and sometimes protecting the smallest things is the place to start. We are excited to partner with Havering Changing to bring with unique production to the best kept secret location in Havering and can promise a surprising piece of theatre experienced on silent disco headphones in the middle of glorious nature!”
