To celebrate Merchant Navy Day, the flag was raised on Friday 1 September outside the Town Hall in Romford by Havering’s Mayor Councillor Stephanie Nunn. Councillor Nunn was also joined by Hornchurch and Upminster Sea Cadets, including the Mayor’s Cadet Archie.

Also present at the flag raising were Havering’s flag bearers, the Mayor’s Consort Councillor Barry Mugglestone and Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon.

The Merchant Navy flag was also raised outside the Royal British Legion in Elm Park by Brian Vallis, an ex-Merchant Navy sailor, as Councillor Nunn gave a speech.
