Havering residents march of anger against ULEZ.
As the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) began its london wide expansion yesterday, Havering residents took to the streets of Romford to march in protest.
Members of ‘Havering People Against ULEZ’, led by Michelle Amato, gathered in Romford Market Place to protest and then marched to the Town Hall to voice their objects towards Havering Council who they feel has let them down.
The march of anger gathered plenty of attention from worldwide media including a Japanese television crew, alongside our own national media and the Havering Daily locally.
Protesters voiced their anger and resentment towards this expansion listened to by local shoppers some of whom even joined the protest to add their support.
At the Town Hall, Michelle called on Havering’s Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon to come and talk to residents about their failure to support residents across the borough. Mr Morgon did come and address the crowd and answer their questions, stating that the council had done everything they could and unfortunately their hands were tied to just how much they could do.
Residents showed their anger at this expansion by stating life changing decisions they were faced with as a result of the ULEZ expansion.
One protester told the Havering Daily: “I work for the NHS in Southend looking after the elderly. I start work at 7.30pm and have to pay £12.50 and finish the following day where I then have to pay another £12.50 everyday to do my job.
“If use the scrappage scheme, I then have to pay finance for a car and I cannot afford that. I cannot afford to get into debt.
“I called the Department of Work and Pensioners to ask for advice as I can’t afford to pay £25 a day to work and they told me, when my money runs out, to apply for Universal Credit.”
Havering People Against ULEZ have been protesting for months and have vowed to keep doing so to support residents across the borough.
Protesters gather outside the Town Hall.
