Havering’s New City College students celebrate an increase in high grades.
Well done to New City College students who celebrated a strong set of A Level and Level 3 vocational results, showing that the college has avoided this year’s predicted national decline in grades.
The college has maintained its high overall pass rate with 100% passes for many subjects, impressive increases in high A Level A*-B grades and high numbers of BTEC students reaching the top Distinction Star level.
A Level Success
At NCC’s Havering Sixth Form campus in Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, A Level students achieved an improved pass rate of 96% with 32% at high grades A* – B. Subjects achieving 100% pass rates include chemistry, further maths, dance, music, music technology, Spanish and French. High grades in further maths increased significantly with 55% of students securing A*- B – a huge increase of 10% on last year. Other subjects with increased high grades include business, sociology, dance, psychology and media studies.
Impressive Vocational Results
BTEC students and those taking other vocational qualifications were also celebrating fantastic results. Many gained the highest grade achievable – Triple Distinction Star.
There were 100% passes in Health & Social Care, Travel & Tourism, Performing Arts and Media & Film at Havering Sixth Form. At NCC Ardleigh Green campus there were 100% passes in Creative Industries, Art & Design, Performing Arts, Music, Beauty and Leadership, Management & Administration. And at Rainham’s Construction and Engineering Centre, Engineering achieved a 100% pass rate.
Principal’s Congratulations
Congratulating the students, New City College Principal Janet Smith, said: “Through hard work, commitment and talent, New City College’s students of 2023 have achieved their qualifications with superb grades, having fully embraced the opportunities that the college has given them. I am particularly proud of their success in the context of a national downward shift of grades and pass rates.
“On behalf of the NCC staff team, I wish each of our leavers every success, whether progressing to higher education or to start their successful career journeys.”
Some of NCC’s successful students include:
Dylan, from Havering Sixth Form, who achieved 3 A* grades in A Level Computer Science, Maths and Physics. He will be studying Computer Science at the University of Bath and said: “I enjoyed college, the atmosphere was good and everyone was friendly. I found the teaching excellent. All my teachers were supportive and gave me extra stretch and challenge work to ensure that I achieved the best results I possibly could. It was nerve-wracking waiting for the results – I was literally up all night not sleeping – but I felt good when I saw the three A stars!”
Scarlett, from Havering Sixth Form, who achieved 2 A* grades in English Literature and History and an A in Philosophy. She will be going to King’s College to study English Literature and said: “My teachers were actually the best. They helped me so much and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. I think I should dedicate my English result to my English teacher Julie, who was so amazing. I went through a bad time just before and during exams with things in my family life. Everything started going wrong for me and I really thought I wouldn’t get great results at all, but thanks to the support I got I was surprised when I saw I had done well.”
Madison, from Havering Sixth Form, achieved Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction in Sport and will be staying with New City College to study the HND in Sports Coaching. Madison is part of the Tottenham Football Development Coaching programme run at Havering Sixth Form and says results day has coincided with celebrations of the England Women’s Football success in getting through to the finals of the World Cup. She said: “I hope this inspires more girls to take the course. I am working with Tottenham coaches and the experiences I have gained from the course have built on my knowledge so much.”
San Jaf, from Havering Sixth Form, achieved Triple Distinction in BTEC Science and will be studying Pharmacy at Kingston University. He said: “The teachers and all the staff at college were so helpful in me achieving my grades! I’m so happy with my results.”
Yamina, from Ardleigh Green campus, achieved Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction and is going on to study Midwifery at City University London. She has ambitions to complete a Masters so that she can become a specialist Midwife.
Atifah, from Havering Sixth Form, achieved 2 A*s in Biology and Psychology and an A in Chemistry. She will be studying Dentistry at King’s College University. She said: “The Medics group I was in at college was so helpful to me as I learned a lot about how to apply for Dentistry at uni and I was given lots of opportunities connected with the medical route. The teachers were great because in my second year I was only achieving Cs in Chemistry but they gave me loads of tips on revision and how to remember what I had learnt – and I ended up getting an A! I’m really happy with my results – it was worth the hard work.”
Amber, from Ardleigh Green, achieved Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction in Applied Science. She is going on to a Software Engineering Apprenticeship with Train Line and said the supportive lecturers and tutors were the best thing about college and helping her to achieve.
Arthur, from Ardleigh Green, achieved Triple Distinction* in Games Development and is going to Ravensbourne university to studying Games Development. He said: “The college has absolutely helped me in getting these results! I had no experience before college and games design was just a passion. Now it is something I really want to do as a job thanks to the college.”
