Pensioners treated to tea and cakes by the community.

Two pensioners who made the headlines after being slapped with a £150 by the council’s new enforcement officers, were treated to tea and cakes by the local community.

Ann and Sue were invited to the Tea Island in Hornchurch on Friday afternoon by Jane from Hornchurch who had seen the social media video of them being fined.

87 year old Ann who has lived in Romford over 50 years, was shopping with Sue when she was targeted by the new officers and handed the fine. Shocked and unaware of why she had been fined, Ann was seen in the social media video looking confused at what had happened.

She told the Havering Daily on Friday that the £150 fine would have meant a whole week’s pension for her. Luckily Councillor Barry Mugglestone Cabinet Member for Enforcement acted quickly and cancelled the fine and issued an apology to Ann for the way she had been treated.

Hornchurch resident Jane was moved by the two pensioners and organised them to have a special tea and cake event last Friday. She also presented the ladies with flowers and vouchers.

The tea and cake was paid for by community member Francesca who had also heard of the event and stepped in to pay for the two pensioners.

Both Ann and Sue had a lovely afternoon enjoying their tea and cake!
