London Deputy Mayor visits Launders Lane with Labour PPC Margaret Mullane.
Margaret Mullane, Labour’s prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, has stepped up the campaign to get all authorities to work together to urgently act to tackle the cause of the underground fires at Arnolds Field, Launders Lane.
As part of this, Margaret met with Fiona Twycross, London Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience, on Thursday 3 August. The purpose was to discuss measures to help with the problem that is a risk to public health from poor air quality across Rainham and is also a threat to London Fire Brigade firefighters in responding to blazes on Arnolds Field.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I wanted to thank Fiona and the London Fire Brigade for their assistance with carrying out thermal imaging across Arnolds Field with their specialist drones. This will greatly help Havering Council decide where to sink the bore holes to find out what has been buried there over years past.”
The visit began with a meeting at Wennington Fire Stationbefore moving onto Launders Lane. The underground fires at Arnolds Field have placed a significant strain on LFB resources. During a twelve month period firefighters were called out on over 80 occasions to Arnolds Field.
Margaret added:“It was good to see the drones actually in operation at Arnolds Field. I also asked for the GLA to look at further ways they can help and support efforts to tackle the problem to improve air quality, the wellbeing of local people and the safety of fire fighters.
Action is needed as quickly as possible to get to a sustainable solution to prevent more fires and give relief to the long suffering residents of Rainham. This has gone on for way too long and I am calling for all authorities and others with an interest in the land to get to grips with this now.”
