The Upminster by-election is to be held next week. The Havering Daily has reached out to all the candidates standing, to share with our readers who they are and what plans they may have for the local ward.

In an ‘Election Special’, The Havering Daily brings you an inside look into the manifestos and personalities of the candidates, providing a glimpse of what they will bring for a better Upminster.

Today, we hear about the Upminster Labour candidate, John Gregory Sullivan.

I was born in Mile End, but I am an (almost) lifelong Havering resident and have lived in Upminster for the last ten years.

Having daughters in a local school, household members who rely heavily on the NHS, and elderly family members, I’ve seen at first-hand some of the results of the appalling decisions the Council has made over the last two decades.  Thankfully, we now have an HRA/Labour coalition working hard to put this right.  I am keen to support the new Administration in its mission to make the lives of Havering residents better.

As a secondary school teacher, I am very aware of the challenges our young people face within school, outside of school, and then, when trying to find work and develop careers.  I believe that if we take the correct decisions for the whole community – as set out in Labour’s local elections manifesto in 2022 – our young people will benefit from a much fairer, more supportive society.

My priorities for Upminster are to:

Support the Council’s Climate Action Plan which is now led by Labour Group Leader Cllr. Keith Darvill as the Cabinet Member for Climate Change.

Promote proactive community involvement with our local police and review the council’s knife crime strategy.

Continue to encourage Secondary Academy schools to address their underachievement at GCSE and A level examinations.

Oppose building on Green Belt land and confirm that Brownfield sites will be developed for new homes to rent as a priority wherever possible.

Work closely with TfL and the National Health Service to ensure their provision of the local infrastructure meets the needs of our residents.

Address the issues of inequality for diverse groups of people in Upminster and Havering as a Borough.
