Community organises a special ‘tea and cake’ event for pensioners fined for dropping litter.
The community has come together to organise a very special ‘tea and cake’ event for the two elderly ladies who were fined by the Council’s new enforcement officers for reportedly dropping a piece of paper on the ground.
The pensioners were filmed by a local shop keeper in Romford as they were targeted by the enforcement officer telling them that one had dropped litter on the floor and was being fined £150. The pensioner who is nearly 90 years old, struggles to walk and walks with a frame to support her, was out with her friend in the town centre when they were hit with the fine.
The Council issued an apology the following day and immediately cancelled the fine, also stating that it will also look into further training for these officers.
Jane from Upminster was so upset by the social media footage that she began gathering the community together to organise a special tea and cake event for the two ladies.
She told the Havering Daily: “It was really sad to see the shock and dismay on their faces as they were told they were being fined. They looked so confused and upset that I think it has really saddened the whole community.
“It is appalling how they were treated and it seems that the elderly are being targeted in particular which is horrendous.”
The Havering Daily contacted the Tea Island in Hornchurch and owner Linda was pleased to invite the ladies for tea and cake to the local tea room as her guests.
Thank you to Linda, Jane and the community for coming together and supporting these lovely ladies.
