Climate campaigner and member of Havering Climate Coalition and Mums for Lungs-Ruth Kettle-Frisby today writes in the Havering Daily.

On Saturday 15th July, I had the pleasure of attending the brilliant Greener Living Fair at The Mercury Mall in Romford. The atmosphere was friendly, lively and welcoming, and the community spirit was palpable.

It was a pleasure to visit Baby Bank HQ, who do so much good for the borough, and were giving away free clothes.

The amazing Havering Green Streets were there, as were Friends of the Earth members Jill Luff and Ian Pirie. Jill and Ian were championing the importance of bees and biodiversity, as well as clean air – their knowledge, care and good humour made their stall a real pleasure to visit.

On to the wonderful Excel Kids Play and Care, who shared their venture in softplay, children’s parties and even crèche-style child care. This will be so useful for parents out shopping; busily trying to tick 101 things from your list can be challenging with young kids in toe!

I walked past some engaging children’s creative activities and vibrant face painting, ending up at the Refill Cabin. They were selling some gorgeous products to entice us into wasting less (and pampering ourselves more, which we definitely all deserve!). It was a treat to experience a taste of Ukrainian culture via beautifully crafted talisman dolls, decorative boxes and jewellery. It’s been becoming clearer to me for a while that Romford Market has a lot to offer these days, and I’m looking forward to making a special trip to visit.

A highlight for me was the Trees for Havering stall. They do a fantastic job planting trees as a community effort, and it felt very special indeed to buy REAL raw Rainham Honey, which I can confirm is absolutely delicious.

Cycle Confident were there adveristing fantastic free courses for children and adults; and all 8 feet (my estimate) of Nick Kingham were put to excellent use as he put a smile on people’s faces, and promoted the energy-saving home and other measures the Council is taking for the environment, as well as raising awareness of our own Havering Green Forum.

I had a lovely time at the Greener Living Fair, and it was one of the many times I have felt really proud to live in Havering.
