Havering Labour Councillors tackle road safety across the borough.
Havering Labour Councillors today write in the Havering Daily on road safety issues.
Your Havering Labour Councillors know how important it is to residents that they feel safe on our roads and streets. The first motion put before the Council regarding e-scooters was of specific interest as trials of their use are being carried out in other areas of London and around the country. We are keen to see the outcome of the safety reports this will produce.
St Albans Councillor Jane Keane, who represents Havering on the London Road Safety Council, drew parallels between e-scooters and the invention of the motor car, “they were invented before all the regulation was in place, and this led to many calls for better safety. The Government has been dead slow in dealing with the legislative and regulatory framework within which enforcement agencies can actually work effectively.”
Heaton Ward Councillor Mandy Anderson, who is Havering’s Member Champion for the Over 50’s, had been listening to the concerns of older residents on this subject at the Over 50s Forum on Tuesday, “As luck would have it, the Over 50s Forum was attended by a senior police officer, and the subject of e-scooters came up. The overwhelming reaction to this issue is that they are seen as dangerous, and make this particular group of residents very fearful of their misuse. Only the police can enforce the law on our highways and I support our officers in their challenging task under constant scrutiny, while under-funded and under-resourced.”
With regards to the second motion of the Council meeting on road pricing, the Conservative Party chose to withdraw the motion, as there was little time left in the meeting for discussion. The Havering Labour Councillors view this as an important topic and hope that it is discussed in the Council soon.
