A drunk male who was shouting at members of the public in Ilford proceeded to spit at police officers after hurling abuse at them.

On 5 July, Redbridge Enforcement Officers were patrolling the town centre when they spotted a man with an open can of alcohol in his hand as well as a closed can in his pocket. He was causing a disturbance and shouting at members of public, including shouting in a woman’s ear.

Police officers were called and attended and the male continued to be abusive, now at officers who arrested him for being drunk and disorderly.

As officers were trying to handcuff the man, he became violent and he spat at one of the officers and then continued to spit at other officers in attendance.

He was restrained in handcuffs and taken into custody where his actions continued.  He was charged with assault of an emergency worker and drunk and disorderly. He has been bailed to Barkingside Magistrates Court to return on 21 July.

Police officers do not go to work to be spat on for doing their job.
