A Daniel Baird bleed unit that has been placed on the wall of Vicarage Fields shopping centre has been vandalised. The unit was found on Saturday (24 June) morning with the lock forced and smashed, and the door wide open.

The unit had been placed at the Barking shopping centre in April by anti knife crime campaigner and bereaved mother Sue Hedges on behalf of the Ricky Hayden Memorial, in a bid to save lives, instead mindless yobs chose to vandalise it.

Daniel Baird bleed units and kits are proven life saving tools in our community. They prevent any form of catastrophic bleeding that may take place after a traffic collision or a stabbing. They are sadly a vital piece of equipment in our community.

Yesterday, 28 June, Sue Hedges returned to Barking with the help of two Havering locksmiths to have the unit repaired.

Nick from ‘Nick’s Locks in Romford and Steve Fairfax of Fairfax Locksmiths both worked on the unit and were able to repair it.

Sue told the Havering Daily:

“I am very grateful to both Nick and Steve who went to the shopping centre in Barking yesterday and repaired the lock on the unit for me free of charge.

“They gave up their own time and petrol money to go there and fix the lock on our bleed box and never charged me any money whatsoever.

“Thank you to them both for all their work. The Daniel Baird bleed kits are proven life saving tools. It sad that whoever did this, clearly did not understand the importance of this box.”
