To celebrate Emergency Response Policing Week, frontline Met police officers are going to be issued with a special ‘challenge coin’ as a form of recognition for all the hard work they do across the capital each day.

Response Policing is the backbone of policing and our community. The job they do each day is vital and often life saving. These officers not only work long hours with very little respite, but are also brave dealing with situations that most of us only witness on our television and would never be brave enough to deal with in reality.

Across East Area yesterday, 118 emergency calls were received that varied from car crime to domestic violence. Head of East Area Emergency Response Policing is Detective Superintendent Michael Dougall. In an interview with the Havering Daily, Mr Dougall tells us more about the challenge coin.

“We want to recognise the hard work our response officers do on our streets, so to thank them we are giving out a challenge coin. We recognise all the hard work they do across London everyday and this is a way to acknowledge them and their work.

“There are positive times coming up for the Met, we have an uplift in our fleet, have more drivers coming through and are providing more dedicated officers across our community.

“Hornchurch and Dagenham were highlighted as areas that needed more support so we have placed dedicated officers there.

“We are also pleased to say that here in East Area we meet our emergency response times in answering calls.”

There have been many worries regarding the shortage of officers parading for our emergency response teams, however here across East Area the teams do achieve the minimum. It is also worth remembering that it has been a very challenging time for officers across London with large festivities to police and of course endless protests that really have drained the capital of its officers.

Mr Dougall also wanted to thank the community for their ongoing support.

“I’d like to thank our communities for all their support. We know at times police cordons can be very testing, but their patience allows us to be able to do our job and we appreciate that.

“Our communities have been very supportive and so we would like to thank them and our officers for all their hard work.”

Emergency Response officers do one of the most difficult jobs in our community and are frequently abused for just doing their job.

Let us take the time today, to say a big thank you to them for everything they do.
