VIDEO:St Albans Ward Councillor calls for ‘drastic improvements’ in the standard of maintenance across the borough’s green areas.
Councillor Judith Holt is calling for a drastic improvement in the standard and maintenance programme of the green areas in Romford and Hornchurch. The active St Albans ward councillor embarked in numerous litter picks across her ward and was horrified with the level of rubbish she collected from our green spaces.
Councillor Holt told the Havering Daily:
“During the last year, the tending of the borders, footpaths and bushes in my Ward has really deteriorated,” said the St. Alban’s Ward Councillor. “I did a litter pick along the ring-road in Romford last week and must have collected over fifty old bottles and cans from within the bushes – and there were more I couldn’t reach. The planters, borders and seating areas, especially those by Wheatsheaf Road and George Street, look tired and unkempt.
“Footpath 157, which runs behind Park Lane and Douglas Road in Hornchurch, is regularly overgrown with weeds and bushes and I’m concerned for the safety of its users. One tree in Dymoke Road in Hornchurch is so overgrown that people can’t walk past it and have to go in the road – dangerous!
“Community groups like Havering Green Streets are doing very good work, but it should not be just down to them. Havering Council really needs to re-think its overall strategy of the green areas.”
