To celebrate all the amazing contributions made by our Windrush generation, a special flag was raised yesterday (22 June) outside the Town Hall in Romford.

The Windrush flag

Between 1948 and 1970 nearly half a million people from the Caribbean landed on the British shores to start a new life. Due to the severe labour shortages following the Second World War, Britain looked to the West Indies to help them fill the employment gaps.

Yesterday, saw Havering Mayor Councillor Stephanie Nunn and Consort Barry Mugglestone raise a special Windrush flag across Havering to remember 22 June 1948 when HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury.

Members of the community came to gather together to mark this day and a special shout out to Havering resident Jackie who came with a picture of her parents who are part of the Windrush generation.

East Area officers were also at the celebrations, Chief Inspector Noori, Inspector Feather and officers from Romford Town centre came to join in the event and pay their respects to the Windrush generation.

Acting Chief Inspector Noori told the Havering Daily: “It was a privilege to attend the flag raising ceremony for Windrush Day. We celebrate and acknowledge the contributions made by the Windrush generation and their descendants to British society. Windrush Day celebrates migration and diversity. It acts as a moment to think of how the people who made the journey from the Caribbean have helped build the Britain we live in today. Listening to and reading colleague’s experiences, memories and reflections helps our service to better understand the world around us and the communities we serve. I want to thank them for sharing their personal stories, as they help make us a better police service”.
